The plant Buttebur (petasin) used for the production of medicinal butterbur preparations contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can be harmful to humans. Do not try to make a Butterbur preparation from plants yourself as the plants are likely to contain these alkaloids.

Butterbur is contra-indicated for use in pregnancy and in breast feeding mothers.
